smiled as she left the office. It had been a long and tiring week, but it was Friday now and she had managed to get away for 4-00pm – early for her. She was looking forward to the weekend because she had already arranged to meet some of her friends from University days tomorrow. They all lived in the same city, having stayed on after leaving University, and usually met up regularly but she had not seen them for several months because she had been really busy at work with the special project which George had given her. It had not been easy – lots of work and a tight deadline – but she had completed it on time, and was happy with the standard of work and the results, hence the smile! She hoped that George would be as happy as she was with the end result!
It was four years since Chloe had left University. She was 26 years of age and had worked at Best Biscuits since leaving University. It was a medium sized, successful, Family owned company which made a range of high quality biscuits. The company prided itself on viewing the whole workforce as part of the organisational family, and its policies, procedures and reward practices reflected these core values. Jobs were secure and payment rates were good. The Company still occupied the same, slightly out of city centre site that it had done since its establishment over 200 years ago. The Managing Director, Edmund Best, had resisted the temptation to sell the buildings for refurbishment into modern apartments at a high profit and move to an out of town ‘greenfield site’ with the accompanying financial grants. The factory and office buildings had expanded over the years, but the whole site was spacious enough to accommodate these needs and still retain the landscaped garden surroundings that the ‘Founding Fathers’ had seen as important for the whole of its workforce to enjoy in their break periods (generous by manufacturing standards). Subsidised canteen facilities were available to all, and there was none of the separate dining areas for different types of staff that characterised many Family firms – at Bests the family atmosphere remained and Edmund, the Managing Director, enjoyed talking with all types of staff whenever he had the chance to do so – lunch was always a good opportunity. Retaining the ‘Parkland’ surroundings was still important to the company and it had even been
