ASSESSMENT GUIDE
The module is assessed entirely by coursework. You will be given formative feedback (to tell you how you are progressing) throughout the semester as you prepare for your assignments. Summative assessment will be through the coursework assignments.
The first assignment (weighted 30%) is a group presentation. This will assess skills related to the collection and use of secondary data sources, evaluation of business environments and the ability to apply and evaluate theory and management approaches. It will also assess your ability to design and deliver a presentation and the skills required to work together in a cross-cultural group. The presentations will take place on Thursday 17th November, 2010.
The second assignment, an individual piece of work is weighted 70% in total and has two parts.
Part One: Contemporary Issue. The first part (word guidance 2,500 words) will assess your ability to synthesise and evaluate current research and requires you to investigate a contemporary issue in global HRM. You are required to submit an outline draft of this in class on Thursday 8th December.
Part Two: Group Processes. The second part (word guidance 1,000) asks you to reflect on the group processes in working towards delivering an effective presentation. Assignment two should be submitted to SHIP by Monday 16th January 2012.
Feedback on both assignments will be provided in written form and will include narrative comments and completion of a matrix (see below) which identifies performance against learning outcomes.
To achieve a pass for an assignment you must demonstrate that you have met the stated learning outcomes to the pass level (40%) stated in the matrices. To achieve a pass for the module overall you must achieve an overall pass mark of at least 40%.
Further details about the assessment are included in the assessment booklet for this module.
Submission of coursework
Your work should be given in to the submission point at the Student Help and Information Point in the Stoddart Building. You should give your work in by hand - it will NOT be accepted by email or fax. You may submit your work from 8.45 on the submission date. Assignment 1 Group Presentation (30% of assessment total)
For this assignment you are asked to work in small groups to prepare and deliver a presentation.
Your task is to imagine that you have been appointed as a group of consultants to advise an organisation which is currently based in just one country about its plans to expand to another country. You have been asked to research the labour market in both the home and other country and then to consider the implications of any differences/similarities for the management of people particularly with regard to work organisation and employee relations.
