The essay is based around the sequence of events associated with financial crises as discussed in the lectures.
In particular, you should address balance sheets, asset prices, interest rates and uncertainty in relation to the initiation stage, and economic activity, banking crises and finally adverse selection and moral hazard in relation to the second stage, which is banking crises.
The essay requires you to illustrate such themes with reference to economic events which are currently unfolding, or have recently developed, in economies around the world.
It further requires you to examine, by way of a critique, the extent to which such themes apply to developed and/or emerging economies.
Marking Criteria
First-class essays will clearly and concisely, explain both stages of a financial crisis, and apply these to real world developments in a coherent manner. They will specifically address events in economies such as Greece, China, the UK or elsewhere and use these to draw valid conclusions regarding financial crises. Tables, charts, graphs and/or statistical data will be included to support the main arguments. A comprehensive bibliography will be included, demonstrating a breadth of reading which includes working and research papers from peer reviewed journals and financial institutions. Essays shall be structured along an introduction, discussion and conclusion, be correctly formatted, presented with proper spelling and grammar, and submitted online via Turnitin.
