6.11. Tables and Figures (this is not a separate section, it is only a reference for the formatting of Tables and Figures).
Tables
• All tables must have table numbers and titles positioned at the top of the table.
• Table captions must be as descriptive as possible.
• The units of each variable given in the tables must be indicated.
• Tables are to be numbered in the order in which they appear in the report.
• All tables must be referenced in the text.
• The table appears directly AFTER the paragraph it is mentioned in. DO NOT put a table in the middle of a paragraph.
• Tables are to be numbered using Arabic numerals (i.e., 1, 2, …).
• A table should not contain too many dividing lines (see example table).
• A table can NOT be split over two pages.
• Leave a blank line before and after a table.
Example table:
Table 1. Mass flow rates of the hot, cold and mixed stream
run mH
(kg/h) mC
(kg/h) mM,exp
(kg/h) mM,pred
(kg/h)
Steady State 1
(0 - 220 s) 2.5 0.5 1.3 0.3 3.6 0.7 3.8 0.4
Steady State 2
(230 - 600 s) 2.5 0.5 3.3 0.6 5.5 0.9 5.8 0.7
Figures
• All figures must have figure numbers and appropriate descriptive captions positioned at the bottom left of the figure.
• Figures and diagrams must be drawn using a computer.
• Jagged "connect-the-dots" curves and unusual axes are not acceptable.
• Figures are to be included as figures and are not to be labeled or called "Graph."
• The units of each variable given in the figures must be indicated.
• Symbols must be used only for experimental data points.
• Predicted values should always be represented with a line.
• The coordinates of each figure on must be labeled with a description, the variable and the units (see the example figure).
• Figures are to be numbered in the order in which they appear in the report.
• A figure can be placed a part of the text or on a separate page.
• If it is included as part of the text then it should come directly after the paragraph it is first mentioned in (just like a table).
• If the figure is to appear on a page by itself, it goes on the page directly after it is mentioned.
• All figures must be referenced in the text.
• Figures are to be numbered using Arabic numerals (i.e., 1, 2, …).

6.12. Appendices
Appendix A:
• The original experimental data for the complete study listed in tabular or graphical form are included in this section of the major report.
Appendix B:b
• A complete sample calculation is to be included in this section.
• The sample calculation must show exactly, step-by-step, how the quantities tabulated in the "Results" section were obtained. This includes all relevant derivations.
• Sample calculations, which must show units for all values, are usually included for only one set of each type of experimental data. The particular set of data used must be clearly identified.
• The source of any expressions or information utilized for the calculations not referenced in the report must be identified.
• Reproductions of computer programs used for calculations are not acceptable as sample calculations, unless they are clearly and completely documented.
