Introduction
With the popularization of English in the world economy and trade, English becomes more and more important. After China’s entry into WTO, Chinese needs to communicate with the outside world, so they firstly have to master the language skill. In this paper, the author aims to analyze the roles of English in Chinese context, and then discusses how awareness of these roles influences English teaching.www.51lunwen.org The outline of this paper is as follows: part 1 introduces the national context of English roles; part 2 introduces the roles of English in China; part 3 analyzes the English teaching context in Polytechnic Schools; part 4 discusses the awareness of these roles influences what does and does not happen in Polytechnic School’s TESOL classroom through three interviews; part 5 is the conclusion.
